U.S. Prosecutors Subpoena Former Builder.ai CFO in Collapse Probe
U.S. prosecutors have summoned Andres Elizondo, former CFO of Microsoft-backed AI startup Builder.ai, to testify before a grand jury in Manhattan this September. The subpoena, issued by the Southern District of New York, signals an escalating investigation into the firm's abrupt financial downfall.
Elizondo, who served as CFO from 2021 to 2023, was reportedly served the subpoena by FBI agents during a Dallas layover in August. While not a target of the probe, he has cooperated fully with authorities. Builder.ai—formerly Engineer.ai—had positioned itself as a disruptive force in AI development before its collapse.
The investigation seeks to unravel the circumstances behind the startup's failure despite high-profile backing. No permanent CFO replacement had been appointed at the time of its demise, according to company lawyers.
